Local Haunts

Unity House of Pizza: The Spectral Woman

After many nights of working late at Unity House of Pizza, I can say almost without a doubt that there is a spirit there. After we close and lock the doors at 10pm, and no customers are in the bar or the dining room, things start to really get interesting. The lights turn off in one side of the kitchen when no one was by the switch, the front-end bell will faintly ring when no one is around, and the tell-tale sound of the squeaky hinge of the locked, front door echoes through the empty dining room. But I have got to say that the most frightening thing to have happen there was a woman's voice call out my name when I was down in the basement. The basement at UHOP is cut in two; there is the first side, under the bar which houses an office, the alcohol cabinets for the bar, the ice bin, and a few other random things. On the other side, under UHOP's dining room and kitchen is another set of offices, usually unused, paper ware storage, four or five large food freezers, and a couple rooms filled with various items. My occurrence happened right as we were opening at 11am on the bar side basement. I was doing my normal chores, cleaning tables, taking care of glasses, and the last thing on my list, filling up the ice bin. I had gotten about four scoops in when I heard someone yell my name, clear as day upstairs, and working with a female cook, I thought she just needed my help with something. So I finish the ice and head upstairs and go over to her to ask what she wanted. She only stared at me blankly, "I didn't say anything" was all she had to say about it. Not only did she not call my name, but she also hadn't heard anything. And to top it all off, all of UHOP was empty. No one had even come inside yet.

Another occurrence with a female ghost at UHOP (there's no telling if its the same one or not) was when the Pepsi cooler guy, who weekly comes in to fill the soda hallway, and the under-bar, alcohol storage area, claimed to have seen a ghost. He was down in the bar basement taking inventory and he went to walk back upstairs and when he looked to the top of the steep, narrow staircase, there was a young woman standing at the top. She has on no shoes and was wearing a sort of off white dress. She just stood there, staring at him and him at her because he was too scared to move. In a single second she was gone, vanished, no where to be seen, and clearly shaken up, the man came right back up stairs, got into the Pepsi truck out back and left. Curious, the owner Vee, went over to the bar to find it totally empty. He called the company and the man had complained to his supervisors saying that he never be put back on the list to deliver to UHOP, and he still hasn't come back.

The Ghost of Route 26: The Lady in White

Imagine for a moment that you are driving home on a dark night. As you round a corner, you see a woman on the side of the road. And not just any woman, but a woman in a white wedding dress. She is young, maybe in her early 20's. As you get closer, she looks at you, pleading with her eyes. Filled with concern, you pull over. She comes to the car and asks if you can drive her to a nearby church. She is clearly distressed, so you tell her to hop in. With a smile and a look of relief, she gets in the car. As you pull back onto the road, she asks you to drive faster. She says she is late for her own wedding. While it seemed odd to have a wedding that late at night, you realize stranger things have happened. You pick up the pace a little, and as you drive, she chats pleasantly though she still seems anxious. Finally you arrive at the church she had mentioned. You pull over, shocked to see the church shrouded in darkness. As you strain to see through the windows, you hear the woman say goodbye. You turn to bid her farewell, but she is gone. Gone? It happened so quickly. Where is she? She is not beside the car, not in the churchyard, but suddenly a chill runs down your spine as you notice the passenger door is still locked and had not been opened. She somehow disappeared into thin air.

Poland Spring Inn: Haunted Hotel

The long-running Poland Spring Resort and its famed water both trace their modern history to 1797, when the Ricker family opened the Wentworth Ricker Inn to travelers in need of room and board. Over the years, the inn expanded into a resort that rose to a fashionable peak during the Gilded Age. Hiram Ricker was the driving force behind the transformation of the property from a wayside inn and a trickle of water into a field of bustling resort and international spring water purveyor. Ricker passes away in 1893 but his spirit is still reported to linger on the property today. Since the resort's humble beginning building have come and gone and been replaced by newer, oftend grander ones. Today paranormal activity has been reported in the Victoria-ear Presidential Inn, the Hiram Ricker Cottage, and the more contemporary Maine Inn, where the 10,000- volume library is the site of many unexplained happenings. Current owner Cyndi Robbins said she's never experienced anything herself, but that employees and paranormal investigators have heard footsteps and voices, and found objests moved to unusual places. Since some say Mr. Ricker still walks the halls tending to his guests, its not surprising to hear Robbines confirm, "They're all friendly ghosts."]

The second floor was a children's hospital before a nursing home. Residents, both current and previous have talked about seeing children. In a certain room, the resident, an older woman would report that there was a little girl wearing a purple dress who kept her up all night long. The woman has passed and another woman has taken up the residence, only she also sees the little girl wearing purple even though the women had never met before.
